The Peace Soup Sure Shot Selection is back in your aural head spaces!

On the wheels of steel for Vol 22 is my fellow Hoglodyte, who's better known for being half of one of New Yorks finest Hip Hop acts The Good People.

He's perhaps even better known (by some) for being a regular DJ on "Jay Smooth's Underground Railroad". New Yorks longest running Hip Hop & culture radio show (Since 1991!).

Disco & classic dance fans will know him from the legendary "Rare Radio" vinyl marathons that are going stronger then ever after 11 years of broadcasting.

It goes with out saying that Em has held down DJ residencies all over New York but most recently he's been providing the city with what for some reason it was sadly missing. A vinyl only, classic Hip Hop party that goes by the name of Recordnition.
A few UK heads I know, only knew Em as an MC. This was funny to me as I only knew him as a DJ having collected his & Monk-One's Underground Rail Road sets for years before I meet them.

The fact is, he does both equally well.

In the Tropical Travel mix Em takes us on a journey through worldly sounding Beats, Bass, Dub, A classic, Hip-Hop, Nu-Jazz, Disco & B-Boy Acid Jazz Breaks before Charlie Chaplin drops some serious thought provoking knowledge on our ass's.

My favorite moment is the Good People’s “Progressive Mentality” skit. Originally recorded as an introduction for there intended 1st album “Office Music”. The skit has Saint picking up Em for a lift to the office, where Em use's the time to put some new material past Saint. Acapella (plus finger click).

Yes I do love Shell fish of which "Marisco" translates to in Spanish. But that's not what this is about.

The Marisco is where I DJ every Friday (& other nights) from March until October. It's name comes from William De Marisco a local badass who made an attempt to kill the then King of England, Henry the 3rd ( he wasn't to keen on some new laws the King was trying to pass).

In true Devonian style "Marisco" made a right mess of the assassination and ended up living on Lundy, a small island off the coast of Devon where he lived as a virtual king and notorious pirate (until Henry caught up with him any way).

The Marisco Discotheque's been in business since 1967 (so long its still called a discotheque) & has been under the management of my home slice Joey Dicker aka DJ Delroydiggler and his family for 19 years.

Joeys started DJ'ing at the club when he was 14. This influenced all his mates and gave us the chance to hear the great music he would bring to the table. From House to Hip Hop and through all the genre's Joey had the best records, of which we got to hear and which started many of us to collect our own records.

The Marisco has never played bad chart music or any chappy cheesy music since it's been in business & never will under Joeys management. Some think of a rarity in today's society. Some times an August tourist crowd might be demanding it at the start but they don't get it and often come back at the end of the night and say thanks for playing great music that they've never heard before.

Through out the 90's it was local DJ's who spun on the hollowed wheels of steel, no posters no advertising but generally a full club every night from wednesday through to saturday.

The DJ's that have held residences before me have been a massive influence & have shaped the quality and standard of today. In historic order starting from when I was about 12 years old these have been the Marisco's resident DJ's.

Big Bossman, DJ Scully, Steven Mcgrath, Nicky Nicky Badboy Ashford, Joey "Delroydiggler" Dicker, Money & The Tech, Adam "Juvenile Delinquence" Neal, Tommy Capron, Nick Rice Paul Turner, Chubb Nice & Richy J.

This is a little mix I did on a lazy sunday afternoon at home, one take, 8 cups of tea, 50% 45's, 45% 12 inch's, 5% SL (ish), one dinner and a few jazz cigarettes and it was time to draw to a close.

The idea was to do a little homage mix in the style of one of my favourite mix's of all time "Monk's Dream" By DJ Monk One. That mix is 80 minutes 21 tracks and i had intended to do the same but over shot as I couldn't decide what tunes to play.

Its all good though as i know for sure 10 or so of these tune will fit inside my final Chubb's Dream Mix some other time.
